Planted by Water

A prayer for grief, from Jeremiah 17:5-8

Despair can make you feel like a bush in the wasteland, and Jeremiah actually uses those words. The alternative he describes isn't a life without drought; it's roots that reach the stream anyway. A prayer for staying green through a scorched season.

But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. Jeremiah 17:5-8 (NIV)

The prayer

Father, in my despair I feel like a bush in the wasteland. But You promise that those who trust in You are like trees by the water. Plant me by Your stream. Let my leaves stay green even in seasons of drought.

Make it yours: change any words that don’t fit, or stop at the one line that’s true today. Amen can wait until you mean it.
