This psalm comes from David's time as a prisoner of people who wanted him dead, so it holds up under real fear. Church leaders can bruise reputations, end friendships, and shake your sense of safety, but there is a hard limit on what they can actually take from you. These verses walk you up to that limit.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? Psalm 56:3-4 (NIV)
The prayer
Lord, those who should have protected me have harmed me instead. But when I am afraid, I put my trust in You. What can mere mortals do to me?
Make it yours: change any words that don’t fit, or stop at the one line that’s true today.
Amen can wait until you mean it.
