The God of All Comfort

A prayer for betrayal, from 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

The cruelest part of church hurt is needing comfort from the very direction the wound came from. Paul opens this letter naming a Father whose comfort comes to you directly, without passing through anyone else's hands first. This prayer asks for that comfort now, and trusts that one day your pain might help someone else survive the same thing.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 (NIV)

The prayer

Father of compassion, God of all comfort, I come to You with a heart broken by betrayal. You see my pain and You comfort me in all my troubles. Even in this suffering, may Your comfort abound through Christ. One day, help me use this experience to comfort others who face similar wounds.

Make it yours: change any words that don’t fit, or stop at the one line that’s true today. Amen can wait until you mean it.
