Forgiveness

A prayer for betrayal, from Matthew 6:14-15

These may be the hardest verses in the Bible to read after real betrayal, and nobody gets to rush you to them. Forgiving the people who hurt you is not saying it was okay, and it is not going back. This prayer is for the day you want the bitterness to stop being yours to carry.

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV)

The prayer

Father, forgiveness feels impossible after what was done to me. But I know You call me to forgive as I have been forgiven. Give me the grace to release this bitterness, not for their sake, but for mine and Yours.

Make it yours: change any words that don’t fit, or stop at the one line that’s true today. Amen can wait until you mean it.
