You Are Mine

A prayer for grief, from Isaiah 43:1-3a

Deep waters is how Isaiah describes it, and nobody who has grieved needs the metaphor unpacked. The promise isn't that the waters won't come. It's that they won't sweep you away, because you've been called by name and you are his. A prayer for mid-river.

But now, this is what the Lord says—he who created you: "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you." Isaiah 43:1-3a (NIV)

The prayer

Father, You created me. You have redeemed me and called me by name—I am Yours. In my grief, I pass through deep waters, but they will not sweep over me. You are with me.

Make it yours: change any words that don’t fit, or stop at the one line that’s true today. Amen can wait until you mean it.
