He Sustains Me

A prayer for grief, from Psalm 3:5

One of grief's strangest mercies is that you keep waking up. You lie down not knowing how you'll face tomorrow, and somehow morning comes and you're still here. The psalmist names the reason: the Lord sustains me. A prayer of bare, honest survival.

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. Psalm 3:5 (NIV)

The prayer

Father, in my grief I lie down and somehow wake again, because You sustain me. You give me sleep even in despair. I will not fear though many oppose me.

Make it yours: change any words that don’t fit, or stop at the one line that’s true today. Amen can wait until you mean it.
