Competence From God

A prayer for fear & anxiety, from 2 Corinthians 3:4-6

Some fear is really the dread of being found insufficient: for the job, the parenting, the week ahead. Paul's answer takes the whole exam away: competence comes from God, not from you. A prayer for showing up without having to be enough on your own.

Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 2 Corinthians 3:4-6 (NIV)

The prayer

Lord, when fear tells me I am not enough, remind me that my competence comes from You alone. I cannot claim anything by my own strength, but through Christ I have confidence before You. Your Spirit gives life where the letter of the law brings only death.

Make it yours: change any words that don’t fit, or stop at the one line that’s true today. Amen can wait until you mean it.
