Madison: groups that already meet, and welcome anyone
Most of the people we meet do not want a new church. They want a few people, a table, and a reason to show up on a Tuesday. It turns out a lot of those tables already exist. They meet in church buildings, they are run by programs that have been doing this for decades, they cost nothing or close to it (a few ask $20 to $25 for a workbook), and most let you walk in without signing anything or telling anyone you are coming.
This page lists the ones in the Madison area, copied from each program's own public locator, with a plain "what to expect the first time" for each, because the hard part is never the address. It is the doorway: will they make me talk, will they ask why I left.
Sanctuary is not a church, and nothing on this page is us sending you back to one. These are programs that happen to meet in church buildings. The host church runs them and carries its own policies, including for children. We do not run them, we have not visited them, and we cannot tell you any group is safe. What we can tell you is what kind of thing each one is.
What "open door" means here
Every group on this page fits three things, by the program's own published rules: it is open to people who are not members of the host church, it asks for no membership, nothing to attend beyond at most a workbook fee, and the host is named so you can look it up yourself. That is a description of the category, not a recommendation of any group. The red flags on the main finder page still apply to anything with a leader and a room.
Celebrate Recovery
A Christ-centered recovery meeting for any hurt, habit, or hang-up, not only alcohol or drugs. Weekly, usually an evening, with a large-group hour and then small share groups.

- Their site does not say. In our experience of the format, the share groups ask, they do not require; you can pass.
- Do I have to be a Christian, or belong to the church
- No. "Celebrate Recovery is for EVERYONE!" (their page)
- Kids
- Some locations run a children's program (ages 5 to 13); ask the host before you go. (their page)
Our read: the lowest bar of the five to walk through: nothing to sign, nothing to pay, nobody expecting you. It is a recovery meeting, so the frame is hurts, habits, and hang-ups, which is wider than it sounds.

The MomCo (formerly MOPS)
A twice-a-month morning for moms of young kids, with childcare in the building, a meal or snacks, and a table of other moms.
What to expect the first time

- A morning, twice a month, with other moms of young kids; food, a talk or an activity, and a table. Their site leaves the details to each local group.
- Cost
- Each local group sets its own fee for the year, and the national site sells a separate $37 membership that is not the same thing. Ask the group what it charges. (their page)

- Their site does not say. Message the group first; every listing has a contact form.
- Do I have to be a Christian, or belong to the church
- Their line: "We know every mom has a place with us," and the group is "a ministry of your church," so the host church's flavor comes with it. (their page)

- Childcare in the building during the meeting is the whole point; confirm ages and cost with the group.

Bible Study Fellowship
A weekly, in-person Bible study class through one book of the Bible at a time, free, interdenominational, with a children's program running at the same time.

- Do I have to be a Christian, or belong to the church
- Interdenominational, and their own material is written for "those exploring faith" as well. You do not belong to the host church by attending. (their page)

- A children's program runs at the same time: "If you have registered children with you, drop them off with the Children's Leaders." (their page)
Our read: the biggest first step of the five: a sign-up, a leader who calls you, homework, a year-long book. It is also the one that is actually about scripture, which is the thing our readers say they miss most.
